Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Michael Andrews and Lucian Freud are all representative of one of the most significant periods in the history of contemporary British art. In World War II, the artists of the School of London were not in search of new artistic forms or directions, unlike their European colleagues. Instead of embracing abstraction, these fervent lovers of tradition remained faithful to the time-honoured concepts of British painting with its focus on personality. The new blockbuster project displays 80 works from Tate Modern.
