In the Russian Empire, the tradition of charity at the highest level was established as early as the reigns of the first Romanovs. Catherine the Great gave them official status and, in the subsequent years, empresses – notably Maria Fyodorovna – headed Russia’s major charity organizations. This exhibition, organized to commemorate the centennial of the tragic death of the Russian imperial family, is devoted to the history of the development of philanthropy in Russia.© 2016-2019 moscovery.com
